Calculations¶
Windmill Aerator Sizing for 100 m² Aquaponics¶
Given: - Aquaponics area: 100 m² (93 m²) - Fish biomass: 250-300 kg tilapia - Current aeration: 2.0-3.0 kWh/day (includes pumps) - Typical aeration-only: 1.5-2.0 kWh/day
Oxygen Requirements:
Tilapia oxygen consumption: 200-400 mg O₂/kg/hour (average 300)
Fish biomass: 275 kg (average)
Oxygen needed: 275 kg × 300 mg/kg/hr = 82,500 mg/hr = 82.5 g O₂/hr
Daily oxygen: 82.5 g/hr × 24 hr = 1,980 g O₂/day = 2.0 kg O₂/day
Air Flow Requirements:
Air contains 21% oxygen by volume
Oxygen transfer efficiency in water: 10-20% (assume 15% with fine bubble diffusers)
Oxygen needed: 82.5 g/hr
Oxygen transferred from air: 82.5 g/hr ÷ 0.15 = 550 g O₂/hr must be delivered
Air density: 1.2 kg/m³
Oxygen content: 21% by mass
Oxygen in air: 1.2 kg/m³ × 0.21 = 0.252 kg O₂/m³ = 252 g O₂/m³
Air volume needed: 550 g/hr ÷ 252 g/m³ = 2.18 m³/hr
Convert to CFM (cubic feet per minute):
2.18 m³/hr × 35.3 ft³/m³ ÷ 60 min/hr = 1.28 CFM
Result: Need approximately 1.3 CFM continuous air flow for 275 kg fish biomass.
Windmill Aerator Selection: - 8 ft diameter windmill: 1-2 CFM output at 10-15 mph winds - Adequate for homestead system with small safety margin - During calm periods (<5 mph), electric backup aerator needed
Seawater Intake Pump - Windmill Performance¶
Given: - Seawater needed: 1,333 L/day - Lift: 10m vertical (ocean to facility) - Horizontal distance: 50m - Total dynamic head (TDH): ~12-15m (accounting for friction losses)
Windmill Capacity Check:
Small farm windmill (6-8 ft diameter): 1,100-2,000 L/day @ 10m lift
Homestead need: 1,333 L/day @ 12-15m lift
Capacity adjustment for higher lift:
Higher TDH reduces output by ~10-20%
Adjusted capacity: 1,100-2,000 L/day @ 10m → 900-1,700 L/day @ 15m
Result: 8 ft windmill at upper end of range (1,500-1,700 L/day) provides adequate margin
Pumping Rate:
Target: 1,333 L/day = 55.5 L/hr = 0.93 L/min
Reciprocating pump sizing:
Stroke length: 6 inches (15 cm)
Cylinder diameter: 2.5 inches (6.35 cm)
Cylinder volume: π × (3.175 cm)² × 15 cm = 475 mL/stroke
Strokes per minute needed: 930 mL/min ÷ 475 mL/stroke = 2.0 strokes/min
Windmill output at 10 mph: ~30-40 RPM
Gear reduction: 15:1 typical for pumping applications
Pump speed: 30 RPM ÷ 15 = 2.0 strokes/min
Perfect match for small windmill!

Payback based on avoided solar panels:
Solar equivalent: 0.4 kWh/day → 5-7 sq ft panels → $250-400 cost
Payback: $4,500 ÷ $325 = 13.8 years (not including battery storage benefit)
RO Mechanical Wind - Feasibility Analysis¶
Given: - RO capacity: 0.6 m³/day (600 L/day) - Operating pressure: 50-60 bar (725-870 psi) - Energy consumption: 1.3-1.5 kWh/day (2.2-2.5 kWh/m³) - Batch operation possible: Run 3-6 hours to produce daily water
Direct Mechanical Drive:
Power required for RO pump:
600 L/day ÷ 6 hours = 100 L/hr = 1.67 L/min
Pressure: 55 bar = 5.5 MPa
Hydraulic power = Flow × Pressure
P = (1.67 L/min ÷ 60) × 5.5 MPa = 0.0278 m³/s × 5.5×10⁶ Pa = 153 W
With pump efficiency (70-80%):
Required shaft power: 153 W ÷ 0.75 = 204 W
Wind turbine sizing:
Average output needed: 204 W continuous during operation
With 25% capacity factor: Need ~800W rated capacity
Wind rotor diameter: ~2-3 meters (6-10 ft)
Mechanical vs Electrical Path:
ELECTRICAL PATH:
Wind turbine (800W) → Charge controller → Battery → Inverter → Motor → RO pump
Losses: 10% (turbine) + 15% (battery) + 10% (inverter) + 15% (motor) = 43% total
Shaft power delivered: 800W × 0.57 = 456W (sufficient)
MECHANICAL PATH:
Wind rotor → Gearbox → Hydraulic pump → RO pump
Losses: 10% (rotor) + 15% (gearbox) + 10% (hydraulics) = 32% total
Shaft power delivered: 800W × 0.68 = 544W (better efficiency)
Efficiency gain: (544-456)/456 = 19% better performance with mechanical drive
Challenges: - Variable wind speed means variable RO pressure (membranes prefer constant pressure) - Need pressure regulation (hydraulic accumulator) adding complexity - High-pressure seawater is highly corrosive (specialized materials) - No turnkey systems available for homestead scale - Custom engineering required ($$$)
Conclusion: Mechanical wind-to-RO is technically feasible and more efficient, but complexity and lack of commercial products make it impractical for homestead scale. Better to use proven solar→RO path and use wind for other loads (aeration, seawater intake).
